With everything going “green” these days, it stands to reason that someone would come up with a lingerie line that was eco-friendly, sexy as well as sustainable. Rio Wrenn is just one of many lingerie innovators that seem to understand what today’s woman wants to wear. The Oregon-based textile designer has come up with a line called R.A.W. that uses natural fibers as well as eco-friendly dying techniques to create a product that is both very ecologically mindful and incredibly sexy. The beauty of the lingerie isn’t expended in the process of going green, however, and some of these pieces are in a word—stunning.
Rio says, “I’m pushing the boundaries of what people consider beautiful. The things I’m using are dirty, rusting, and things people wouldn’t consider putting on their clothing. [I enjoy] finding beauty in uncommon means. I love nature and was always interested in the use of plants for medicinal healing, but probably the first thing that interested me in plants was using them as dyes.”
Today’s modern lingerie designers are dialed in to a woman’s body. Rio Wrenn’s lingerie line has looks that are not only flattering to, but emphasize the unique curvature of a woman’s physique. Corsets, once used to “conform” a woman’s body to fit an ideal, are now used to accentuate the natural curves of her figure. The garments are now used to be supportive and yet are shockingly comfortable not to mention incredibly sexy.
Some of the “green” lingerie pieces are truly one of a kind works of art. Using unique dye sources like rust, (yes I did say rust!) flower petals, madder root, cochineal, pomegranate, and osage orange as well as other plants, each garment becomes unique to itself and is very special. Many of the pieces have a vintage flair with a decidedly modern twist. This coincides beautifully with the recent hot trend of wearing lingerie “on the outside”.
